Launched in November to mark the 50th anniversary of the first screening of Ken Loach’s landmark film, Cathy Come Home, the Reel Homes competition was open to up-and-coming filmmakers.

A panel of judges from the worlds of film-making and housing whittled down 33 entries to a shortlist of 10, whose test footage will be shown at Roxy Bar & Screen in London next Thursday evening (4 May). The films tackle subjects ranging from rough sleeping and temporary housing to estate regeneration.

The winner, announced on the night, will receive a £1,500 cash prize and funding to develop a short film of around 20 to 25 minutes in length.

“As judges, we were impressed by the high standard of entries and faced a tough job narrowing down the field,” says Inside Housing editor Emma Maier.

“It is fantastic to see that so many talented filmmakers have been inspired to tackle the difficult yet important subject of homelessness and the impact of the housing crisis, and take such varied approaches in doing so. Their work tells both real and fictional stories, which not only make a vital contribution to the debate but will also help bring awareness of often under-reported issues to a wider audience.”

If you would like to come along to the free screening on 4 May (the closest tube station to the venue is London Bridge), please register at www.insidehousing.co.uk/reelhomesscreening
