Of those who were eligible to vote, 84% voted in favour of their blocks being demolished, with 72% of the South Kilburn residents participating in the ballot.

The plans to rebuild 1,400 homes for existing council tenants and households in temporary accommodation, are part of a wider regeneration project in South Kilburn by Brent Council, which could see 2,400 new homes being built.

Other improvements to the neighbourhood, include parks, roads and open spaces will also go ahead as planned.

In July 2018, new rules came into force in London, which require estate regeneration schemes to be voted in favour of by tenants if they are to receive funding from the mayor.

Brent Council said all current tenants are guaranteed a new home on the estate if they want one, while leaseholders can either choose to leave the estate with a market value payment for their home, or stay with a share of the equity on one of the new homes.

Households living in temporary accommodation will be entitled to a secure tenancy in a new home on the estate when one becomes available, the council said.

Shama Tatler, Brent Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, property and planning, said: “The community has always been at the heart of plans to improve South Kilburn, so it is only right that local people had the final say on the future of their neighbourhood.

“Over the past 10 years we have carried out a tremendous amount of work alongside residents, listening to their views and ensuring these are prioritised. That will continue to be the case as the award-winning regeneration programme moves forward.”
