The Labour Party has put two of its MPs in charge of shadowing the Communities and Local Government department’s work on housing.
Former trade unionist Jack Dromey has been tasked with covering housing, regeneration, and the big society. He will work alongside Alison Seabeck, who confirmed yesterday that she will take the policy lead in shadowing housing.
Mr Dromey is a former Labour Party Treasurer, and deputy general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union. He was elected as MP for Birmingham, Erdington this year, and is married to the deputy leader of the Labour Party, Harriet Harman.
He told Inside Housing: ‘We will mend the link between bad housing, ill health, educational achievement and high unemployment.
‘The coalition does not have a cohesive housing policy. There have been conflicting messages which lack clarity.’
Mr Dromey and Ms Seabeck will work under shadow communities and local government secretary Caroline Flint. The shadow CLG team also includes Barbara Keeley and Chris Williamson.
