Queen’s Speech: government commits to implementing Grenfell Inquiry recommendations as housing pledges unveiled

The government laid out its plans in the Queen’s Speech yesterday, with housing featuring unexpectedly prominently.

Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to implementing all the recommendations from phase one of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, which included making it a requirement for building owners to develop evacuation plans for all high-rise blocks and an urgent inspection of fire doors.

The speech also repeated Conservative manifesto promises such as the renewal of the Affordable Homes Programme, bringing forward the Social Housing White Paper and introducing First Homes sold at a 30% market discount.

However, the shared ownership Right to Buy policy announced by housing secretary Robert Jenrick in October was conspicuous by its absence.

And The Daily Telegraph carries a comment piece calling on the Conservatives to focus their housing policy less on first-time buyers and more on affordable housing.

The Doncaster Free Press reports that Doncaster Council will not revisit its local plan, which includes plans for 18,000 new homes, following severe flooding in the area last month.

And the Slough & South Bucks Express runs a story on Slough Council’s plan to follow a number of London boroughs and start placing homeless households outside the area.

Meanwhile, Manchester’s historic Belle Vue greyhound stadium is to be demolished and replaced with 247 new homes built by Countryside, according to Manchester Evening News.
