A leading housing chief executive has called on those in the sector concerned about gender inequality to be “really vocal” and take action on the issue.
Barbara Spicer, chief executive of Plus Dane, told Housing 2017 in Manchester: “You can only change things through action, and actions change cultures.”
Speaking at a Fringe session entitled, ‘Women and leadership in housing: why aren’t we there yet?’, Ms Spicer lamented the “macho”, “bigger is better” culture in housing. “There’s an awful lot of willy waving going on,” she said.
She suggested “direct action” was needed to bring about change, pointing to the People’s Powerhouse event launched by two female council chief executives in response to the paucity of female speakers at the UK Northern Powerhouse International Conference earlier this year.
