At the black tie event at the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London last night, judges handed awards to landlords for their outstanding approach to development, tenant involvement and regeneration, among others.

Tower Hamlets Homes, which manages 21,000 homes in the east London borough of Tower Hamlets, was named Landlord of the Year, while Stoke-on-Trent Council was named Council of the Year.

The UK Housing Awards, run by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), is the largest and longest-running awards in the sector and is now in its third decade.

For the second year running, more than 1,000 people attended the event, with Sally Phillips of Smack the Pony fame overseeing proceedings.

More than 19 prizes were handed out to various social housing sector organisations, including Hyde Group for Home Builder of the Year (more than 1,000 homes) and Engie for Contractor of the Year.

Tower Hamlets Homes also took the prize for Inclusivity and Diversity Pioneer.

Terrie Alafat, chief executive of the CIH, said: “These awards are an amazing showcase of the ingenuity, innovation and passion of housing professionals and organisations right across the UK. They are a tribute to the outstanding work done every day to provide safe, good-quality, affordable homes and create the foundation for sustainable communities and happy, healthy lives.

“As always, it was incredibly difficult to decide the winners, when so many entries had so much to commend them. Everyone involved should be very proud of themselves, as well as determined to share their successes so that others can learn from them.”

Martin Hilditch, editor of Inside Housing, added: “It was inspiring to see and hear about the incredible work of all the organisations nominated for the awards tonight and many more of those who entered. The standard was incredibly high and speaks of the amazing work done by so many who work in social housing.

“At its heart, the social housing sector is about the people it serves and tonight’s winners embody that. They should be very proud of all they have achieved.”
