Prime minister Theresa May’s previous promise of an inquiry was reiterated as the government’s agenda for the next two years was set out in the Queen’s Speech this morning.

“My government will initiate a full public inquiry into the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, to ascertain the causes and ensure that the appropriate lessons are learned,” said the Queen.

She added that an “independent public advocate” will be set up to help support the victims and bereaved families during inquests.

The speech also confirmed a Draft Tenants’ Fees Bill banning lettings fees, first unveiled by chancellor Philip Hammond in last year’s Autumn Statement.

“Proposals will be brought forward to ban unfair tenant fees, promote fairness and transparency in the housing market and help ensure more homes are built,” the Queen said.

In addition, the Queen said that ministers “will work to improve social care, and will bring forward proposals for consultation”.
