Red Road flats to be demolished

Glasgow’s remaining iconic Red Road 30-storey tower blocks are to be demolished later this year, as part of Glasgow Housing Association’s regeneration plans.

Glasgow Housing Association (GHA), Scotland’s largest social landlord, will work with demolition specialists Safedem to bring down the remaining six blocks – a move which GHA says will change the city’s skyline forever.

The housing association sparked controversy last year with subsequently abandoned plans to demolish five of the blocks as part of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

David Fletcher, director of regeneration for GHA, said: “Our contractor is preparing the blocks for demolition with work carried out to stringent health and safety regulations.

“We’ll continue to work with members of the local community about arrangements for the day.”

Safedem and GHA previously worked together to demolish two of the original eight Red Road blocks in 2012 and 2013.
