Housing associations completed 3,130 new homes in the 12 months to the end of March 2018, the Scottish Government’s annual housing statistics update showed.

Across all sectors, the number of houses built in Scotland rose 4% to 19,428 in the period.

The Scottish Government has committed to build at least 50,000 affordable homes over the current parliamentary period, including 35,000 for social rent. Ministers said the latest figures showed it is on track to meet that target by the time of the next election in 2021.

However, approvals for new housing association homes slipped by 5% to 4,710 in the year.

Local authority new builds soared by 34% to 1,499 in the year, while privately owned new builds slid by 325 homes or 2%.

Scotland’s housing minister Kevin Stewart said he is “immensely proud" the government had delivered more than 78,000 affordable homes since 2007.

On the latest figures on affordable housing, he added: “This is backed by more than £3bn – the single biggest investment in, and delivery of, affordable housing since devolution and we are determined to see it benefit all parts of Scotland.”
