Sovereign has replaced its interim finance chief after she left only one month into the job #ukhousing

Rita Akushie, who was appointed as interim chief financial officer in October, left the organisation last month to take up a permanent position at Cancer Research UK in the new year.

She was occupying the role at Sovereign after Mark Hattersley left, joining Clarion, the UK’s largest housing association, as its finance chief. That position was itself vacated by Mark Washer in April, when he became the chief executive of Sovereign.

Ms Akushie said: “While I’ve only been at Sovereign a short time, I’ve been impressed with the people, their strong financial foundations and ambitions for the future.

“Although it’s disappointing to leave so soon, the offer of a permanent position as CFO with Cancer Research UK was too good an opportunity to miss.”

Sovereign has replaced Ms Akushie with Barry Nethercott, who will join the 57,000-home association on 2 January.

In the past 10 years, Mr Nethercott has worked in executive positions at several housing associations, including Guinness Partnership, Southern Housing and Network Homes.

Mr Nethercott said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Sovereign at an exciting point in their transformation. Sovereign has a great reputation for being financially strong and I’m looking forward to working with the team to really maximise the impact of their investment in people and places.”

Mr Washer added: “I’d like to wish Rita all the best in her new CFO role at Cancer Research UK, it’s a fantastic opportunity for her.

“While we continue our search for a permanent CFO, it’s great to have an experienced and talented executive like Barry joining the team.”
