The CLG list names 27 staff, with a further 10 director posts at regional government offices. The top earners in the housing and planning unit include Richard McCarthy, director general of housing and planning, who picked up between £175,000 to £179,000. Andrew Wells, director of planning, picked up between £115,000 and £119,999 and Terrie Alafat, director of housing growth, markets and strategy, received between £105,000 and £109,000.

Other published salaries included John Fiennes, director of sustainable building and climate change, who earned between £85,000 and £89,999 and Ruth Stanier, director of housing standards, homelessness and support, who pocketed between £75,000 and £79,999.

Francis Maude, minister for the Cabinet Office, said: ‘For the first time anyone who wants to can see at a glance how many people work in any team in any department, giving an unrivalled insight into the way government works.’
