Residents from 102 flats in the Manchester block were evacuated over the weekend after the electricity in their homes in Circle Court, Stretford, went off over the weekend. The housing association has warned that some might not be able to return home until Friday.

Following the outage, a number of flats were left without heating or hot water, although water was restored to all homes and the lifts were working again by Saturday evening. Gas safety checks were also carried out as a precaution.

Although power is now back on for some of the homes, 44 flats are still without electricity and a number of residents are still being housed in temporary accommodation.

Staff from THT and Electricity North West are working to solve the remaining electrical issues, but warned this is likely to take until Friday. Temporary accommodation and support is in place for all customers affected.

It is understood that the power outage occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning after one of the building’s upper floors was flooded. This caused water to run down the stairwell and into the electrical system.

THT said it responded to the emergency situation immediately.

On Saturday evening, a local leisure centre was made ready to take in all affected residents and centre staff were on call throughout the night.

The housing trust also offered all residents pizza in the community space on Sunday. The community space doubled as an information centre over the weekend.

Larry Gold, chief executive of THT, said: “Our customers are at the heart of all we do. We are sorry for any inconvenience and we are working hard to resolve the ongoing issues quickly. We are grateful to residents for their help, support and understanding – they have been absolutely amazing.”

Iain Wallace, director of property services at the association, said: “We have worked closely with the fire service and Electricity North West and both have complimented the trust on the fire safety works to date and the quality of the compartmentation works. These controlled damage and minimised disruption at the property.”
