Most landlords would agree with the principle of involving tenants in decision-making. Yet, the structures for doing this vary widely between providers. Do tenants need to have a seat on the board in order to exert influence or can this be meaningfully achieved in other ways? Does having tenant board members necessarily mean that the organisation will listen to tenant views and act upon them effectively?  This session will explore the role of tenants in ensuring good board oversight and corporate governance and ways to strengthen accountability to tenants.

Discussion agenda will include:

  •        How to increase the representation of tenants at board level while balancing good governance and risk
  •        How to recruit diverse voices and people from non-traditional backgrounds
  •        Building the confidence and skills of tenants to engage at board level
  •        What does a great board culture look like? How to enable healthy challenge and conflict
  •        How to increase board-level accountability to tenants
