Water waste reduction and energy efficiency
Managing water use already features in conversations around sustainable housing, such as with nutrient and water neutrality requirements.
Yet there is a tangible relationship between reducing household water waste and energy efficiency. Heating water is amongst a household’s most energy-intensive activities, and the less water you heat, less energy you use.
The cornerstone behind reducing water wastage is Cenergist’s Control Flow solution with HL2024® technologies. Installed easily into meter chambers or the mains pipework, this flow management solution targets the naturally occurring pressure fluctuations in a household’s mains system to reduce water waste.
Field tests have shown water savings of roughly 30 litres per day for an individual and 73 litres per day for a household.
Control Flow delivers a consistent, steady flow of water through a boiler, reducing the amount of excess water being heated and energy demand on the heat plate, improving efficiency and driving down costs.
Unpacking bill savings
Field tests in households where Control Flow solutions are installed have shown significant utility bill reductions. The data around these tests has been independently verified by the University of Liverpool.
In total, we have calculated that annual utility bill savings of £285 can be achieved. A household daily water saving of 73 litres resulted in annual water bill reductions of £115.
For gas, the reduction of 73 litres resulted in a drop in consumption of 7.37kWh, with calculated bill savings of at least £170 when using the 2025 Ofgem price caps.
Scaling up water and energy efficiency
As discussions around increasing energy performance in social housing and tackling fuel poverty remain firmly on the agenda, solutions like Control Flow will be increasingly pivotal.
Yet the benefits can be felt now. It is already live in thousands of homes across the UK as part of Cenergist’s work with water companies to reduce household water waste.
In the Netherlands, we work with the social housing provider WoonFriesland to ensure homes are both water and energy efficient.
Energy price volatility, and concerns about fuel poverty, will be a constant source of anxiety for social housing residents, and it is essential for providers to be seen tackling the problem head on.
By thinking holistically about water and energy, with measures such as Control Flow, the sector can demonstrate a meaningful commitment to a greener, more sustainable future which protects residents.
