The UK’s largest housing association has launched an innovation prize worth up to £20,000 for individuals or organisations.
The ‘William Sutton Prize’, launched by Clarion Housing Group and named after the Victorian entrepreneur who founded one of Clarion’s pre-merger predecessors, is intended to encourage innovation for social good.
There are two categories to the prize: the William Sutton Prize for Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the William Sutton Prize for Excellence in Social Housing Design and Placemaking.
The former prize is for an individual or organisation “that has developed an innovative concept, service or product to make a positive social impact on a community”.
Meanwhile, the latter is for an individual or organisation “that has developed a ground breaking design concept for the benefit of social housing residents or a mixed tenure community”.
The £20,000 pot for both prizes will be provided by Clarion Futures, the housing association’s charitable foundation, with applications opening on 29 May and closing on 31 July.
A panel of five people will judge entries, consisting of: Greg Reed, chief executive of Home Serve; Clare Miller, group director of governance and compliance at Clarion; Peter Fortune, deputy leader of Bromley Council; Bilijana Savic, director of the Academy of Urbanism; and Peter Holbrook, chief executive of Social Enterprise UK.
Clare Miller said: “Clarion Housing is the largest housing association in the country, but we wouldn’t be here at all without William Sutton’s entrepreneurial spirit and his passion for social housing.
“We are launching the William Sutton Prize to champion the power of innovation for social good and looking forward to seeing a wide range of ideas, from inspiring community leaders to visionary architects.”
