Lancaster West Estate plans published #ukhousing

Six practices presented design suggestions to residents of the Lancaster West Estate today.

Kensington and Chelsea Council has been working with the Lancaster West Residents’ Association (LWRA) to decide the Estate’s future since the Grenfell Tower fire last June.

The government announced £28m of funding for the estate last November including £15m for improvements, which the council has promised to match.

Public workshops were held in January and February to hear residents’ views on how to improve the Estate.

Jacqui Haynes, chair of the LWRA, said: “This is our unique opportunity to have a voice on the future of own our estate.

“After the tragedy of last June, this is a fundamental step in residents beginning the process of rebuilding their lives and looking to the future.

“Many of our residents attended the events and we are clear on the need for positive change. The LWRA is working to ensure that the Council lives up to its promises to continue to listen to residents and make this a model estate and secure our rights to improved living conditions.”

Work on a number of small projects will begin shortly, with larger programmes planned for next year.

The architects and designers were appointed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in November, in consultation with the LWRA.

Lancaster West is one of London’s largest estates with more than 1,000 homes.
