A housing association director and champion for adaptable homes has been appointed as the Cabinet Office’s new housing disability and access ambassador.
Vanessa Dockerill, assistant development director for Thrive Homes, will be the department’s only housing ambassador and is one of 12 ambassadors appointed by the government to ensure businesses are consciously supporting customers with disabilities and employees.
The Cabinet Office has appointed ambassadors for the energy industry, hospitality and university sectors.
Commenting on her new role, Ms Dockerill said: “I am passionate about improving the accessibility and standard of services for disabled people across the sector.”
“The quality of service for disabled people has come a long way over recent years,” she added, “but there is still a lot more to be done and improvements to be made, which working with the industry I am keen to drive forward.”
Her appointment comes at the same time as the government’s new national strategy paper for disability in the UK, in which ministers have pledged to improve building accessibility and safety for residents living with disabilities.
Alongside her role at Thrive Homes, Ms Dockerill is a board member at Habinteg, a housing association specialising in accessible and adaptable homes.
She has 30 years’ experience of working in the construction and housing sectors, with previous roles at companies including Redrow Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Catalyst New Homes.
Commenting on the new ambassador appointments, Justin Tomlinson, minister for disabled people, health and work, said: “I am very excited to welcome this incredible, impressive group of people as new disability and access ambassadors. They will help support the existing team with our programme to increase access for disabled people across a wide range of private sector industries, and I am really looking forward to working with them.”
