Weaver’s Way – Grainge Architects

Weaver’s Way is a collection of 13 energy-efficient eco-homes, three of which are for sale at reduced prices through the government’s First Homes Scheme, in the village of Sandford, Devon. This project demonstrates how thoughtful contextual design, strong sustainability values, close attention to detail and community engagement can be combined to produce an outstanding place to live.
From the outset, the development prioritised the long-term health and comfort of its occupants. A fabric-first approach focused on exceptional thermal performance and airtightness, with both exceeding statutory requirements. Air source heat pumps and underfloor heating further contribute to thermal performance and effectively manage energy consumption.
The site’s extensive landscaping – including retained mature trees, new native hedgerows and wildflower meadows – creates a biodiversity-positive setting that encourages outdoor activity.
Architecturally, Weaver’s Way balances contextual sensitivity with confident, modern design. The use of stone, render and timber respects the heritage and identity of the village, while window proportions are inspired by the Georgian sash windows of nearby properties. The result is a development that feels rooted in place.
The judges said:
“A commendable scheme and a very strong application. Deep thought has gone into the materials used, the impact on health and well-being, and respecting the local context”
