Octopus Energy’s ‘Zero Bills’ initiative provides customers with future-proofed low-carbon homes freed from energy bills. It integrates sustainable technologies such as air source heat pumps, solar panels and batteries, alongside Octopus-powered smart Zero Bills tariffs, into both new builds and retrofitted homes.

Renewable energy is stored in the batteries for when demand is higher, when it is used by the household or sold back to the grid. Residents are guaranteed no energy bills for up to 10 years.

Octopus’ Zero Bills team has been key to the roll-out of this initiative. They work extensively with a range of partner organisations including house builders, housing associations, local authorities and technology manufacturers.

Crucially, this team has established robust feedback loops, actively listening to insights from householders and partners. Just 18 months after launch, the Zero Bills initiative has created a significant pipeline of homes: it is being applied in 1,200 new builds under construction, and is being assessed in more than 8,000 retrofits.

The judges said:

“This team is delivering a sector-first innovation that directly tackles fuel poverty. Their creation and roll-out of homes with guaranteed zero energy bills has redefined the relationship between housing, energy and affordability”
