How did you get into housing?

I used to work in the debt collection industry. Then I saw an opportunity to work as an income recovery officer at Bron Afon, which was closer to home. I wasn’t looking to work in housing particularly.

How do the jobs compare?

It was a lot more stressful in the private sector – working eight ‘til late, having to meet targets. The first month [at Bron Afon], I just sat with officers for a month and picked the job up like that; I think I fell asleep at one point! But I’ve learned so much. I love working here.

Describe your role in 10 words or less

Intense, high-pressured, enjoyable, fulfilling, constant, carries plenty of responsibility.

What has this role taught you?

Enforcement isn’t always the right way to go. Things can be happening in people’s lives that affect their ability to pay. The job has taught me a lot about empathy and about other people’s lives – and to not jump to conclusions.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Just to do my job as well as I can.

What’s the best thing about your job?

How I’m managed. I’m allowed to make my own decisions. My boss backs my ability and my decision-making.

What are you plans for the future?

I’ve moved around a lot so I’d like to get settled in Bron Afon and progress – perhaps in housing or support.

What would you do if you were prime minister for a day?

I’d put all MPs on the minimum wage. And make them pay the bedroom tax.

Just to give them a taste of life on the breadline?

No, forever! I’ll never get over the expenses scandal. Let’s make them work like normal people.

What do you to do to relax away from work?

I DJ on most weekends around the country. Generally house and dance, or “boom boom boom” music, as my dad calls it. But I’m 32 now and it’s getting a bit loud for me in the nightclubs!

Which track would be soundtrack to your life?

Probably Show Me Love by Robin S.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out in housing, what would that be?

Talk to people in all the different departments and roles within your organisation.

What single thing would improve your job?

An all-in-one IT system, which we are currently building. When it’s finished I’ll be able to see straight away whether a tenant has had repairs done, or any history of anti-social behaviour, for example – it will make everyone’s job much easier.
