The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has lined up the boss of a Dublin-based housing association to be the chair of its governing board.
John Hannigan, who is chief executive of Circle Voluntary Housing Association (VHA), will replace Geraldine Howley in October, the CIH said.
Ms Howley, a former long-serving chief executive of Incommunities and one-time CIH president, initially took up the CIH chair role on an interim basis in April 2018 before being appointed permanently in 2019.
Mr Hannigan has worked in the housing sector for around three decades and spent the last six-and-a-half years running Circle VHA, which operates around 2,000 homes across Ireland.
Earlier in his career, he worked for West Midlands-based Accord Housing Association, a precursor to GreenSquareAccord.
Mr Hannigan is also chair of the advisory board at Chartered Institute of Housing Ireland.
His also chairs the Housing Alliance, a group of Ireland’s seven largest housing associations.
On his new appointment, he said: “Working closely with the board and management team at CIH, I plan to drive continued growth and excellence for our sector and particularly our members.
“Together, we will navigate the evolving landscape, collaborate with stakeholders on the issues that matter, and seize opportunities that will deliver value for our members.”
In October, CIH president Jill Murray told Inside Housing that she wanted to focus on improving professionalisation across the sector.
Gavin Smart, chief executive of the CIH, added: “I look forward to working with John and the rest of the governing body to ensure CIH continues to be a successful, accountable, strategic, modern, inclusive and dynamic organisation that is both prepared to face future challenges and fit for purpose.”
Ms Howley is due to take over as chair of 38,000-home Together Housing this summer.
