Council starts work building first homes for 25 years

Basildon Council, which has a housing stock of around 10,000, plans to build 584 new homes over the next five years, including 96 funded through its Housing Revenue Account.

It is currently building 11 new two-bedroom homes at three redevelopment sites across the borough, with the schemes expected to complete in early 2018.

Gavin Callaghan, chair of the council’s policy and resources committee, said: “We want to ensure we have properties for key workers, which is a central pillar of our housing strategy, and we also want to ensure we retain young people who might have otherwise have had to look for homes outside the borough.

“This is just the beginning in an aggressive new strategy for council housebuilding in Basildon.”
