Nathaniel was also victorious in the Housing and Residential Journalist of the Year category, with the judges singling out his work exposing the £1bn spend on temporary accommodation as particularly worthy of praise.

The judges said: “As always, the ‘best of the best’ was very good – the property industry and the wider built environment is well served by journalism like this – but perhaps this was an exceptionally higher level of entries, even by historic standards. “[Nathaniel] tackled the important subject of homelessness and fruitfully used Freedom of Information requests backed-up by statistical analysis to identify the worst example of council spending on temporary accommodation. It was a revealing article that hopefully was read in Whitehall.”

Luke Barratt, finance reporter, took home the gong for Scoop of the Year – for his work revealing that the Hackitt Review would not ban combustible materials, a story which helped trigger a u-turn in government policy.

There was also a win for Jess McCabe, features editor, who claimed the prize for Feature Writer of the Year with her work about sexual harassment in the housing sector commended by the judges.

Inside Housing’s new podcast, The Housing Podcast, was highly commended in the Multimedia Journalist of the Year category, and news editor Peter Apps was named News Reporter of the Year.

Reporters from the magazine were nominated for a total of 18 awards at the annual event which is open to journalists reporting on the built environment – far more than any other magazine.
