A man has died in a fire at a tower block owned by Glasgow Housing Association, the police have reported.
Firefighters were called to Cheviot Court in Knightswood, Glasgow, at around 5.50am on 26 March, according to a statement from Police Scotland.
A spokesperson for the police told Inside Housing: “A 37-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he later died. The fire is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
The building is a 24-storey tower block on Kirkton Avenue, built in 1969 and containing 138 flats. It was also the site of a fire in June 2017, three days after the Grenfell Tower blaze, although on that occasion no one was killed.
A spokesperson for Glasgow Housing Association, which is Scotland’s largest housing association and part of Wheatley Group, said: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the man who has died. We are continuing to talk with residents in the block, offering information, advice and reassurance about all the measures we have in place to help keep them safe.
“As part of our Stay Safe campaign, we have been encouraging people to get a home fire safety visit which is carried out by fire officers and gives people useful tailored advice about safety in their home.
“As a result of this we have seen a 94% uptake in home fire safety visits and this has contributed to a 14% reduction in accidental fires in our homes in the last year. We would again encourage anyone who has not had a home fire safety visit to get in touch with us.”
A devastating fire last year saw more than 30 housing association households made homeless when the Glasgow School of Art was partly destroyed.
