Birmingham City Council has approved investing £183m into its housing services over the next four years.
The authority’s cabinet agreed to spend £168.6m on upgrading its stock and a further £14.8m on adaptations, clearance and redevelopment costs between 2017/18 and 2019/2020, bringing its total housing budget to almost £359m.
Birmingham City Council currently owns and manages 62,616 homes, making it among the largest social landlords in the UK.
Peter Griffiths, cabinet member for housing and homes at Birmingham City Council, said: “The average age of our properties is approaching 70 years, so investing in our stock is essential in order to safeguard its condition.”
He said the programme will help deliver new facilities to around 20,000 properties. The council’s cabinet also voted for a 1% reduction in rent, in line with the government’s policy.
