Artangel proposed a pyramid scuplture by Mike Nelson made out of the old blocks of one of the high-rise buildings on the estate but was branded ‘insensitive’ by former tenants.

The decision made last week by the council was branded ‘disappointing’ by Artangel.

A spokesperson said: ‘Over the past few months, we have had productive conversations with Southwark councillors, officers and different interest groups in the borough. We are very disappointed by Southwark Council’s decision to stop Mike Nelson’s proposal progressing. We feel a great opportunity has been lost.’
