Derby house fire: Third person charged

A 45-year-old man has been charged with the murder of six children who died following a fire in a Derby council house.

Paul Mosley, of Derby, is due to appear at Derby Magistrates’ Court today in relation to the fire in Victory Road, Allenton, on 11 May.

The children’s parents Michael and Mairead Philpott were charged with murder on 30 May and will appear at a plea and case management hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday.

Duwayne, 13, Jade, 10, John, 9, Jack, 7, Jessie, 6, and Jayden Philpott, 5, all died following the fire in the Derby council home, managed by arm’s-length management organisation Derby Homes.

A 49-year-old man also arrested yesterday was released without charge.

Steve Cotterill, assistant chief constable at Derbyshire Police, said: ‘Three people have now been charged with the murder of these children. This man stands accused alongside Michael and Mairead Philpott.

‘Our investigation will continue in an effort to gain justice for the children.’

Yesterday’s charge was authorised by a Crown advocate from the Crown Prosecution Service east midlands complex casework unit.
