Mr Tennant, who stepped down from Orbit in December after 14 years at the 39,000-home organisation, will replace the Law Society’s current boss, Catherine Dixon, who will step down from her post tomorrow.

Robert Bourns, president of the Law Society, said: “Paul has been chief executive of a large and complex housing organisation but also has a clear understanding of non-executive leadership roles, having been president of the Chartered Institute of Housing. This perspective will be helpful as we consider future ways of working.”

Upon stepping down from Orbit last year, Mr Tennant said it “was the right time to move on” and that it had been a privilege to lead the housing association, however no further explanation was given for his departure.

Mr Tennant will begin his new role on 6 Februray.
