Ms Wheeler has been minister for housing and homelessness since January 2018, during which time she was in post for the banning of letting fees and the implementation of the government’s Rough Sleeping Strategy, which aims to half rough sleeping by 2022.

Last month, Ms Wheeler was forced to apologise after The Guardian published leaked emails sent before she joined the government in which she described rough sleepers as “the traditional type, old tinkers, knife-cutters wandering through”.

Luke Hall, MP for Thornbury and Yate, confirmed over the weekend that he will be joining the ministry as parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

However, Mr Hall’s exact responsibilities are yet to be confirmed by Number 10. This is the first ministerial position held by the 33-year-old.

He is the latest new face to join MHCLG after Robert Jenrick was unveiled as housing secretary and Esther McVey landed the role of housing minister last week.

Ms McVey began her time in the role on Friday by visiting a new development in Gosport, where she indicated that her time in charge of the brief would be aimed at giving “millions of young people the chance to own their own homes so we can make the dream of homeownership a reality”.
