Labour homeownership review launched

John Healey will officially launch the Labour-commissioned Redfern Review into homeownership today.

The review, first announced last September, will begin looking at ways of reversing a fall in recent years in homeownership levels.

The review will be headed up by Peter Redfern, chief executive of house builder Taylor Wimpey. Among those advising on the review are Kate Barker, a former member of the Bank of England monetary policy committee and Terrie Alafat, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH).

It will collect evidence over the next few months and is expected to report by the end of summer.

The UK Housing Review, published last March by the CIH, found levels of homeownership among younger people have dropped in recent years.

Two-thirds of 25 to 34-year-olds were homeowners in 1991, compared to more than a third in 2013/14. The review used figures from the English Housing Survey. Mr Healey, shadow cabinet member for housing, tweeted today that “homeownership for young people is in free fall”.
