Morning Briefing: Grenfell survivors ‘turn to food banks’

Labour MP Emma Dent Coad has said Grenfell survivors are having to use food banks, reports the Huffington Post.

Speaking at a Labour Party conference fringe session, the Kensington MP reportedly accused Kensington and Chelsea Council of “unprecedented incompetence” in failing to care for survivors. The story has also been covered by the Metro newspaper, which says £20m has been raised for survivors.

Inside Housing’s leader last week said “social housing is back on the agenda”, following positive comments from Sajid Javid and a call for social rent from David Orr.

Yesterday afternoon, The Guardian ran a piece with contributions from Terrie Alafat, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing, and Adam Morton, policy leader at the National Housing Federation, again making the case for investment in sub-market housing.

Will relaxing green belt regulations really help solve the housing crisis? The Guardian has a collection of reader letters debating the issue, including views from academics.

Elsewhere, Universal Credit – under which a number of benefits are rolled together into one payment direct to households – begins its roll-out in Northern Ireland tomorrow. Non-profit organisation Advice NI is calling for the policy to be suspended and the BBC has a report about this.

The Yorkshire Post newspaper has this morning published a feature looking at a project aimed at helping homeless people with alcohol and drug dependencies. It is worth a read.

And finally, the Evening Times in Glasgow is reporting a row between housing association tenants and Scottish Power over broken stair lighting.
