South London housing association Wandle has appointed the boss of a major doctors’ membership body as its new chair.
Valerie Vaughan-Dick stepped up to head the 7,000-home landlord’s board on Monday.
Dr Vaughan-Dick currently leads the executive team at the Royal College of General Practitioners as its chief operating officer. The membership body represents 54,000 GPs across the UK.
She succeeds Ian Green, who has served as acting chair since Tom Bremner left the role in autumn.
Wandle has been graded G2 for governance and V2 for financial viability by the RSH since August 2018, indicating compliance with the regulator’s standards but a need “to improve some aspects of its governance arrangements” and “manage material risks” to its financial viability.
It was hit with a regulatory notice in late September for failing to implement the rent cut properly.
A qualified accountant, Dr Vaughan-Dick previously chaired an NHS Trust and is currently chair of the Woolwich Creative District Trust, a regeneration project in south-east London’s Royal Arsenal.
She is also a board member and chair of the audit and risk committee at fellow London housing association Network Homes.
Her career has also involved senior roles at the Housing Corporation and a housing association.
“Meeting the housing needs of our community has never been more important,” Dr Vaughan-Dick said.
“It is a privilege to be appointed to this role, for a housing association that serves the south London community I am proud to be a part of.
“I am looking forward to working with the board and executive team, and our partners across the sector, to make a difference to the lives of those who live in our homes.”
Tracey Lees, chief executive of Wandle, said: “The board and executive team are delighted to confirm Dr Vaughan-Dick’s appointment.
“Valerie is committed to the community and making a difference to those we serve.
“Her significant experience in housing, regulatory and public service will bring considerable insight and perspective to the board.
“We would like to thank our outgoing chair, Tom Bremner, once again for his service over the past seven years, including the last three as chair, and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
