A man has died in a fire at a sheltered housing block managed by Housing & Care 21.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service said it was called to the fire in the Kent village of Wilmington at about 7.45am yesterday.

Nine ambulances attended the incident as well as an air ambulance and paramedics from the Hazardous Area Response Team. Some 20 patients were assessed. One man died.

“Eight patients have been taken to hospitals in Dartford and Medway by road, none of whom were thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries,” said the ambulance service yesterday.

“We declared a major incident due to the number of patients and resource involved. The major incident has since been stood down.”

Based near the M25, Emily Court consists of 40 one and two-bed flats for rent by people aged 55 and over.

Birmingham-based Housing & Care 21 has been contacted for comment.
