Union officials pledged to fight pay inequality within housing associations as they warned of rocky times ahead for staff fighting to protect their jobs.
Delegates at a voluntary sector conference held by union Unite last week railed against the soaring pay packets of housing association chief executives, highlighted by Inside Housing’s 2008 salary survey.
Sharon Singleton, chair of the Unite’s non-profit sector committee, said the union needed to challenge association bosses’ salaries. ‘It’s getting a bit more alarming because as time goes on, the pay of these individuals is getting more substantial, but the pay of those working in those organisations is not,’ she said.
Housing staff were facing a ‘roller coaster’ during the recession, with fears of income cuts, an erosion of terms and conditions and redundancies around every bend, she added.
