Better Futures (UK Shared Prosperity Fund) – the Greater London Authority

Sponsored by:

Better Futures is the third iteration of a programme launched seven years ago with the aim of fostering a thriving cleantech ecosystem in London. It provides direct support to cleantech SMEs from across the capital. Through strong partnerships with delivery partners – including Imperial College London, climate tech hub Sustainable Ventures and the Greater London Authority – and local authorities, this programme has significantly influenced London’s green economy, benefiting micro-businesses (61% of participants) and small companies (29%).
The programme has driven job creation, supported innovation and enhanced business sustainability. Despite obstacles such as the energy crisis, rising costs and post-Brexit impacts, the programme has remained a cornerstone of London’s sustainable business support ecosystem. It has delivered tangible results: 51% of participating companies developed new products or services, while three-quarters said their expectations of the programme had been met or exceeded. This collaboration serves as a model for systemic change.
The programme demonstrates the importance of long-term commitment, shared infrastructure and clear partner roles. By prioritising collective impact over individual recognition, it has created a sustainable framework that others can replicate.
