Arup has embedded net zero at the heart of its corporate business strategy and operations. The firm has committed to achieving net zero across its full value chain by 2040, with an ambitious interim target of reaching net zero in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. To this end, Arup has developed a net zero plan aligned with the Science-Based Targets Initiative. Since setting these goals in 2019, progress is already evident: Arup has achieved an 86% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and 100% renewable electricity procurement for its properties since 2023, and is on track to phase out fossil fuel heating in its global offices by 2030.
Beyond its operations, Arup’s impact is amplified through projects and partnerships. Its Retrofit at Scale Taskforce supports systemic decarbonisation by advising public and private sector bodies on retrofit strategies. Meanwhile, a £1m investment with Nattergal and Wilder Carbon will restore 67.5 hectares of UK land, delivering nature-based carbon removal and biodiversity benefits.
What the judges said:
“Arup has clearly demonstrated an approach that not only allows them to mitigate their operational impacts but to act as an exemplar and pull through decisive action via their supply chains and into projects”
