Wondrwall’s collaboration with housing association Stonewater is revolutionising affordable, low-carbon living by combining AI-driven energy management with Passivhaus design and on-site renewables. This smart home system learns how occupants use their space, analysing over 20,000 daily data points to optimise heating, lighting, battery storage and solar usage – delivering significant carbon and cost savings without compromising comfort.

At Stonewater’s 20-home Mendip View development, Wondrwall’s AI platform saw households’ carbon emissions halved and energy bills collectively reduced by nearly £23,000 annually compared to gas-heated equivalents. One home generated almost 80% of its energy needs onsite. These impressive outcomes informed the next rollout of this technology: Star Ground, a new Passivhaus-standard development in Wiltshire powered by the same smart system. Early results show average annual savings of up to £800 per household, a 60% reduction in energy bills, and net energy consumption and CO2 emissions far below UK averages. Residents can control and monitor their systems via a mobile app, while Stonewater analyses performance data to inform future developments.

The judges said:

This feels like the future – clever tech working hand-in-hand with solid design principles. Stonewater hasn’t just gone for Passivhaus or smart systems – they’ve gone for both, and that combination has real potential”
