A week in the life of Hussein Hall, a senior team manager (homelessness and prevention) @OneHousing #UKhousing

Monday

At the start of the week I like to be prepared [Hussein’s week covers the period during Lockdown 2.0]. On my way to the office I check my work emails, so I’m able to plan my day accordingly. As a senior manager of services that accommodates young people, I always try to have Monday mornings free, so I’m able to assist in anything that has taken place over the weekend. This weekend has passed quietly so I’m able to focus on the tasks that are in hand.

I meet a young person who is very excited to start her job as a barista. I was extremely impressed that she has been able to secure a job during Lockdown 2.0. I let her know how proud I am. She explains that she is excited but at the same time worried about early starts. I speak with her about managing her time more effectively and going to bed a bit earlier.

I then catch up with my team, find out if tasks have been completed and if there is anything outstanding which requires my attention. I then check my calendar to plan my day and start to arrange meetings for the following week.

Tuesday

Today I travel to another service to meet up with my new team manager but to also say farewell to the deputy manager as she found herself another job. Upon arrival, I bump into one of the young parents who is excited to move out. She explains how beneficial the service has been to her and her children and that the service has felt like a family home.

I meet with the new team manager, inducting him into our processes and what tasks are required on a weekly basis. I spend most of the morning with him, also introducing him to various colleagues.

The afternoon is spent in virtual meetings, some with the commissioning team and some with internal colleagues. With meetings being held online due to COVID-19, I have adapted the way that I work to accommodate my internal and external stakeholders.

Wednesday

First I carry out the weekly PPE stock check. It’s important to ensure that there is enough stock on site to enable our staff to work in a safe way. I also check my manager’s stock check to ensure that they have updated the spreadsheet.

I then meet with a local authority personal advisor (PA) to speak about the move-on process. A young person within our service is ready for stage three of the pathway. After putting forward my proposal, the PA agrees with my assessment and we moved them on. Stage three is a very big achievement and a big step towards independence.

Thursday

I spend the morning receipting orders. It is important that this is completed so we can pay our external stakeholders.

I also recently had two support officers join the service who I manage directly, so I check in with them.

When working for an organisation for as long as I have, I always remember that when someone new joins, they will not know what I know. Tasks that are second nature to me will not be for someone new, so I ensure that I coach them with the knowledge I have to enable them to do their job more efficiently.

Friday

Friday is the day which most people look forward to the most, but it’s worth remembering that support officers will still be working over the weekend. I check to see that everything is in place for the weekend and that staff have the resources they require.

I also have a check-in meeting with a young person who has to complete his AQA qualification to enable him to move onto stage three. We have a lengthy chat about choices and communication.

Afterwards, I return back to my office and check emails to ensure that tasks for this week have been completed. I then find out about an incident. As the team manager is on leave, I make the professional network aware and the steps that will be taken over the weekend. The incident form is completed and is sent to the professional network.

I finish by tidying my desk, ready to start again on Monday.
