Evidence sought for building regulations review

Dame Judith Hackitt, chair of the review, said the team is particularly interested in hearing about what is working well in the current regulatory system and what could be changed to improve fire safety.

The review team has asked if there are “gaps, inconsistencies and/or overlaps” in the existing legislation and if it is “clear and well understood”.

The team also wants to gather thoughts on whether the current system places a “clear, overarching responsibility on named parties for maintaining/ensuring fire safety requirements” in tower blocks.

It is also seeking evidence on whether people tasked with assessing compliance with building regulations and fire safety requirements are “appropriately trained and accredited”.

The review team has also asked for examples of “good practice” in building regulation from other countries.

Successive government ministers have delayed reviewing the building regulations, despite a commitment in 2013 by then communities secretary Eric Pickles to do so in response to the Lakanal House coroner’s recommendations.

The deadline for submissions to the independent inquiry is 13 October.
