The government has allocated funding from its One Public Estate programme to 160 projects across England that are expected to deliver 17,000 new homes and 19,000 new jobs #UKhousing

Roughly £20m of the funding comes from the Land Release Fund (LRF), which aims to enable the redevelopment of local authority brownfield sites for housing.

A further £10m will go towards projects that support collaboration between local and central government and the wider public sector, aimed at improving service delivery and efficiency, the government said.

The OPE programme was introduced in 2013 by the Cabinet Office and the Local Government Association (LGA) with the aim of releasing 25,000 new homes by 2020.

Announcing the allocations on Friday, the government said funding through OPE will help with the creation of feasibility studies and design work for potential development sites.

Housing minister Christopher Pincher said: “It is a priority of this government to deliver more new homes and create vibrant communities for people to live and work. Last year alone we delivered more than 240,000 new homes across England, which is more than any point in the last 30 years.

“We want to build on this. That’s why I am delighted part of this funding will be used to unlock often unused and derelict land, transforming them into the new homes our country needs.”

Funding from the LRF includes £1.04m for projects in North Yorkshire for land remediation and infrastructure works to provide land for around 140 homes in Harrogate, Skipton and Knaresborough.

James Jamieson, chair of the LGA, said: “This latest news is more proof that One Public Estate is working, it is helping local government to build innovative work, and it is having a demonstrable impact on our local communities.”
