Affordable housing completions in Scotland have risen 7% year-on-year, according to Scottish Government figures released today.

A total of 6,912 affordable homes were completed in the year to the end of September, a 7% rise on the previous year.

This figure includes a 13% increase in affordable rent completions to 122 homes, and a 9% increase in social rented homes. Housing association completions totalled 2,828 homes during the same period, an increase of 10% on the previous year.

The statistics also show, though, that the total number of new homes completed across all tenures for the year ending June 2015 was 15,258, 5% lower than the figure for the same period the previous year.

Commenting on the figures, Chartered Institute of Housing Scotland director, Annie Mauger, said she was concerned over the general fall in houses across all tenures.

She said: “Given current budget constraints, delivering the number of new homes that are needed will require some genuinely bold new thinking.”

The figures also show a major increase in Right to Buy applications. There were 1,099 applications in April to June, 25% higher than for the same period in 2014 and 57% higher than in the same quarter in 2013.
