More than 100 residents self-evacuated from the building including two adults and a child from the flat where the fire is believed to have started, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

A man and a woman had to be rescued by firefighters via an internal staircase and the man was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The LFB said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.

A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Homes said: "Our highest priority is to ensure that residents are safe and supported during this difficult time of the aftermath of the fire at Haleigh House and are working closely with the council, tenant management organisation, partners and the emergency services.

“We have provided and continue to offer temporary accommodation for residents and are keeping in close contact with them whilst assessments of the building are made.

"We would like to thank the London Fire Brigade for their swift response in the early hours of the morning and have given them every assistance with their investigation."
