The judging panel felt the developers listened to the needs of the community when creating the 60 extra care units for affordable rent. Thorner’s Court was built in the 1930s as housing for elderly women in Southampton but did not meet the decent homes standard. The new two-storey scheme, which received £4.5 million in Homes and Communities Agency funding, retains the grade II listed clock tower. The first phase, comprising 30 units, was completed in December 2012.
