Terrie Alafat, the outgoing boss of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), has been appointed as the new chair at Riverside.
Ms Alafat, who will step down as chief executive next month, will take up the role at the 56,000-home landlord in April. She will replace the Liverpool-based association’s current chair, Max Steinberg, who is retiring.
Ms Alafat announced in July that she was leaving the CIH after just over four years heading up the organisation.
She joined the CIH from the Department for Communities and Local Government, where she was director of housing. She has spent 23 years in the housing sector.
At the CIH, she had committed to make the organisation “financially robust” but it has posted a loss in recent years. However, it is expected to return to profit by 2020/21.
Mr Steinberg said Ms Alafat’s “wealth of knowledge of the housing sector and her work in shaping policy will be instrumental in continuing to take the group forward”.
Ms Alafat said she was pleased to be joining to Riverside which “values align strongly with my own”.
Riverside, which operates across more than 160 local authorities, reported a 56% drop in group post-tax surplus to £26.4m in its most recent financial year off a revenue of £364m.
