Simon Dudley has been appointed as the new chairman of Ebbsfleet Development Corporation #UKhousing

Today, housing minister Christopher Pincher confirmed the four-year appointment of Simon Dudley as head of the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation board, replacing Michael Cassidy.

Prior to the appointment, Mr Dudley held the role of interim chair of Homes England, where he has also served as a non-executive director and senior independent director.

Mr Dudley served as the leader of Windsor and Maidenhead Council from 2007 to 2019, during which time he made headlines for writing to Thames Valley Police insisting on legal action against rough sleepers in the run-up to the wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Windsor.

He takes on the role of chair of Ebbsfleet Development Corporation six years after it was first set up by the government to oversee the delivery of a new 15,000-home garden village in Kent.

Ebbsfleet is the first garden city to be built in the UK for over 100 years and is one of the largest developments on brownfield land in the UK.

Currently just 2,200 homes have been completed, despite promises that 1,000 homes per year would be delivered from 2017/18 onwards.

Mr Pincher said: “I am delighted to announce Simon Dudley has been appointed as the new chair of Ebbsfleet Development Corporation and would like to thank Michael Cassidy for his sterling work over the past six years.

“The Ebbsfleet, Northfleet and Swanscombe area has huge potential to create not only new homes but also a vibrant community where people want to live and work.

“We look forward to working with him and wish him every success in helping to deliver a garden city of which we can all be proud.

Mr Dudley said: “The creation of Ebbsfleet Garden City is a fantastic opportunity to grow a new community and business location where London meets the Garden of England.

“Building on a series of brownfield sites in one of the best-connected locations in England, we aim to deliver a vibrant new city of up to 15,000 new homes.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be appointed by the prime minister to one of the most successful regeneration projects in the country and I can’t wait to start.”
