Gentoo names experienced chief executive following turbulent two years #ukhousing

Nigel Wilson appointed new chief executive of Sunderland-based Gentoo #ukhousing

The 30,000-home provider has appointed Nigel Wilson, the current chief executive of Wythenshawe Community Housing Group in Manchester.

Having started as a housing officer in the 1980s, he is now chair of both JV North, the consortium of associations, and the charity Furniture Resource Centre.

Gentoo was savaged by the regulator and downgraded to a non-compliant rating due to a huge executive pay-off which was not approved by its board.

It followed the departure of Peter Walls, chief executive, who did not receive the large pay-off, the redundancy of 330 staff following the rent cut in 2015, and a restructuring of its complex group structure.

Keith Loraine, chair of the association, appointed in September, said: “The group board and I are delighted that Nigel will be joining Gentoo.

“He has a fantastic track record as chief executive and a very credible reputation in the sector. We were particularly impressed with his leadership and people development skills and his commitment to good governance and delivering excellent customer service.

“With his vast sector experience, I’m confident he will successfully lead Gentoo so we can continue to make a positive difference, and work towards our vision for the city of Sunderland.”

Mr Wilson will replace David Jepson the interim chief executive in January.

Mr Wilson said: “I’m looking forward to getting started. I’ve followed the great work Gentoo has done over the years and understand the current challenges facing the group and the sector.

“I’ve been particularly inspired by Gentoo’s customer and staff focus. It has achieved so much over the years and this success is something that I want to build upon, working with the new board and dedicated staff to deliver fantastic results.”
