Housing associations in Northern Ireland have exceeded targets for starting new homes, Mervyn Storey has announced.
Mr Storey, minister for social development, announced that housing associations have started more than 10,000 homes since 2011/12, beating an 8,000-home target set by Stormont in 2011.
Associations started 6,101 homes for social rent and 3,965 homes provided for low-cost homeownership.
The development was supported by £570m of investment from the Department for Social Development and £300m of private finance secured by housing associations.
Cameron Watt, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations, said: ‘In achieving this target our sector has demonstrated our commitment to fulfilling a growing role in meeting housing need. Housing associations can continue to deliver many more great homes and help build thriving communities.’
