A group of residents at a large London housing association have demanded a say in the selection of the organisation’s new chair, following the resignation of its chair last week.

Residents demand say in selection of new chair of Notting Hill Genesis #ukhousing

Dipesh Shah plans to stand down as chair of the newly merged Notting Hill Genesis at the end of the month. He was formerly the chair of Genesis, which merged with Notting Hill in April to form a 64,000-home organisation – one of the largest in the country.

In a statement published yesterday, the Joint Committee of Notting Hill and Genesis Residents criticised Mr Shah, saying he had overseen the sale of many social housing properties.

The residents’ group said the merger was “fiercely resisted by residents but forced through”. The merger was approved by shareholders of both groups in April, despite protests by some residents.

Shareholders comprise residents, founders, current and former board members, and people with an interest in social housing, the organisations said.

Mr Shah, who announced his resignation on 7 January and will be standing down end of the month, said he was pleased with the progress made during his period in power, and that it was “an appropriate time to hand over the baton”.

In response to the residents’ statement, Notting Hill Genesis said: “We strongly disagree with this group’s assessment of Dipesh Shah’s tenure.”

“We recognise the views of this residents’ group, but they are a small, vocal number who have been persistently opposed to the merger.

“Our constitution outlines the process for selecting a chair, who is elected by the board.

“This decision is reserved to the board and cannot be delegated. The process of choosing a new chair is under way and his or her appointment will be announced once the process is concluded.”
