The Budget today reveals that the government has ‘appointed the University of York to lead a study into the feasibility and economic impacts of direct commissioning of housing on a significantly wider scale.’ The government in December confirmed it was pressing ahead with a plan to pilot the direct building of homes on a 10,000-home site in Northstowe.

Under the Northstowe plan, three quarters of homes on the government-owned site will be built under direct contract with the public sector.

The Budget document said: ‘This model will help the development to build out at twice the rate of a conventional private sector route.’
