Landlords reveal the types of cladding on their tower blocks

Social landlords have shared details of the type of cladding they have on their tower blocks in a snap survey by Inside Housing.

Inside Housing has asked social landlords which have cladded tower blocks, and which are yet to identify the type used, what material is on their buildings.

There have been 50 responses so far (see table below).

Landlords have said they are using materials including zinc, copper, mineral fibre and powder-coated aluminium as well as the aluminium composite material (ACM) panels used on Grenfell Tower.

These include landlords whose cladding samples have failed tests carried out by the Building Research Establishment on behalf of the government.

The government told housing associations and councils to send samples to be tested if the cladding was made of ACM.

Over the weekend the government revealed every sample that has been sent for testing has failed combustibility tests. Sixty towers in 25 local authority areas have failed the test.

However, some landlords have sent for testing samples which are not ACM.

A spokesperson for Hull City Council said the cladding on its tower blocks is solid aluminium with mineral fibre-based insulation, which is “non-combustible and offers a greater degree of fire protection”.

She added: “Even though we know that cladding used on our buildings in Hull is made of solid aluminium and is not aluminium composite, for the reassurance of our residents we are seeking to take advantage of these testing procedures and send samples from the cladding panels used for new build and high-rise buildings in Hull.”

Landlords have been tearing down cladding from tower blocks in which there is concern over fire resistance. Doncaster Council, Camden Council, Thirteen, Salford Council and Manchester Council have all started to remove cladding.

This story will be updated as more responses from landlords are received.
